 Collection
Identifier: LACUMC-Sugar Town Circuit MECS

Scope and Contents

The Sugar Town Circuit Methodist Episcopal Church South (Beauregard Parish, La.) records consist of a quarterly conference record book containing administrative reports about the activities of congregations located in southwest Louisiana. The reports include information about the spiritual condition of congregations, the religious instruction of children, financial matters, and statistical information about baptisms and membership. Specific individuals identified in the volume are usually church administrators. In some instances, members are identified upon baptism or death.

The quarterly conference reports indicate the circuit’s name changed over time: Calcasieu Circuit, Opelousas District (1868-1870); Calcasieu Circuit, Alexandria District (1871); Sugar Town Mission, Opelousas District (1872-1873); Calcasieu Circuit and Sugar Town Mission, Opelousas District (1873-1878); Sugar Town Circuit, Opelousas District (1879-1882).

Churches identified in these circuits include: Clear Creek, Dry Creek, Harmony, Hopewell, Liberty Grove, Mount Pisgah, New Hope, Oak Grove, Pine Island, Sugar Creek, Sugar Town, and Sweet Home.

Biographical / Historical

The Sugar Town Circuit, located within the Opelousas District, appears to have been created by the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South around 1872. It has connections to the older Calcasieu Circuit. The circuit consisted of multiple congregations, some of which appear inconsistently and seem to have been short-lived. Churches identified include: Clear Creek, Dry Creek, Harmony, Hopewell, Liberty Grove, Mount Pisgah, New Hope, Oak Grove, Pine Island, Sugar Creek, Sugar Town, and Sweet Home.
