Scope and Contents

The Melville Methodist Church (Melville, La.) records consist of two church registers and a Sunday School record book. The older register contains the following sections: pastors (1893-1917), marriages (1889-1922), infant baptisms (1890-1926), and members (1886-1921). The second register contains the following sections: pastors (1926-1927), marriages (1927), baptisms (1927-1928), and members (1923-1925). The Sunday School record book contains the following sections: class rolls (1922), financial records (1923-1948), and meeting minutes (1922-1923).

Biographical / Historical

Melville Methodist Episcopal Church South (Melville, La.) was organized in 1886. In 1887, the congregation purchased an abandoned Baptist church building and moved it to Church Street. In 1894, this building was destroyed in a storm and rebuilt. In 1949, the congregation sold their church building and property to construct a new church located at the intersection of First and Payton Streets.
