Scope and Contents

This collection consists of the minutes of annual meetings (called a District Conference) by the New Orleans - Slidell District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church. These meetings were attended by the district’s clergy and lay delegates from each pastoral charge; it was presided over by the district superintendent.

The minutes document the administrative activities of the meetings and regularly include information about lay activities, resolutions, and reports from the following: United Methodist Women, District Board of Church Locations and Buildings, and Board of Global Ministries.

Biographical / Historical

The New Orleans - Slidell District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church was formed in 1977. In 1977, the New Orleans District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church was dissolved through the creation of two new districts: New Orleans - Houma District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church and the New Orleans - Slidell District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.

In 1978, the district reported 14,888 members. The district consisted of congregations in southeast Louisiana stretching from Franklinton (north) to New Orleans (south) and Lutcher (west) to Pearl River (east).

In 1989, the New Orleans - Slidell District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church was dissolved. The congregations that constituted the district were assigned to other districts: New Orleans District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church and the North Shore District of the Louisiana Conference of the United Methodist Church.
