Biographical / Historical

The New Orleans District of the German Mission Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (MECS) formed in 1874. The German Mission Conference consisted of German-speaking MECS congregations in Louisiana and Texas. Prior to 1874, these Louisiana churches had belonged to the Louisiana Conference MECS. At its 1874 formation, the New Orleans District of the German Mission Conference consisted of 4 pastoral charges (3 in New Orleans, one in Lake Charles, La.) and 333 members. In 1885, the German Mission Conference churches in Louisiana left to reunite with the Louisiana Conference MECS and formed the “Louisiana (German) District.” At that time, the district consisted of 7 pastoral charges throughout South Louisiana and 457 members.
