Biographical / Historical

Thibodaux Methodist Episcopal Church South (Thibodaux, La.) traces its history to the appointment of Rev. Benjamin Coxe to the Lafourche Mission in 1832. The Thibodaux congregation began constructing a church building in 1845 which was completed in 1852. During the Civil War and until 1866, the church’s property was used by an African Methodist Episcopal Church congregation. In 1873, the Thibodaux Methodist Episcopal Church South consisted of only eight members with many previous members having transferred to the community’s Episcopal Church. By the 1890s, the congregation remained a small number of members sporadically served by a minister. In the early 1900s, the church’s property was sold. In 1948, the church was reestablished as the Thibodaux Methodist Church.
