Biographical / Historical
Louisiana Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church South (New Orleans, La.) originated as the Laurel Street Methodist Episcopal Church South (New Orleans, La.) in 1854. In April 1860, the congregation purchased land at the intersection of Magazine and Louisiana Avenue and moved the church building to that location in spring 1863. In 1864 and 1865, during the Federal occupation of New Orleans, the church was used as an African American church and school. In 1866, the church’s name was changed to the Louisiana Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church South. The congregation began a project to construct a new church in 1884, but they did not complete the building and hold a dedication service until March 1893. In 1935, the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South placed the Louisiana Avenue church under the Rayne Memorial Quarterly Conference “to be disposed of for the settlement of indebtedness to the Board of Church Extension, and such material and money remaining after sale to be used for the Gentilly church.”
