Biographical / Historical

New Creation United Methodist Church (Shreveport, La.) was located at 1220 Vaughn Street, Shreveport, Louisiana. It began with the merger of two older congregations. On November 18, 2001, the decision was made to merge the congregations from Johnson Chapel United Methodist Church and Mount Zion United Methodist Church. The first service for the new church was held on December 2, 2001, at the Johnson Chapel church. At a meeting on December 19, they decided to name the new church the New Creation United Methodist Church. New Creation UMC closed in 2005.

Johnson Chapel was organized in 1902. After first meeting in homes and under a brush arbor, the group began meeting in an abandoned store on Stoner Avenue in 1907 under the leadership of Rev. C. C. Smith. They bought a lot at 1220 Vaughn Street in 1909 and put up a temporary structure by January of 1910. In 1916, a church was built on the site. In 1940, the lot next to the church was purchased and a parsonage built.

Mount Zion was organized between 1865 and 1867 in Bossier Parish. The congregation was originally known as Bridge Methodist Episcopal Church. After first holding services in homes, they used a tent at the Old Brownlee Plantation. James B. Pickett and his wife donated 2.5 acres in the Vanceville community to the church on November 23, 1874. In 1889, the church was renamed Mount Zion Methodist Episcopal Church. A church, built on the site in April 1900, was destroyed in 1936. Rev. R. B. Garrison led the congregation in rebuilding the church. The church was damaged in 1954 and had to be rebuilt once again. In 1989, the church relocated to 3816 Virginia Avenue, Shreveport, Louisiana, under the leadership of Rev. Wayne Williams. The old church burned in a fire in 1994, though its cemetery remains on the property at the east end of Courtney Lane, Bossier City, Louisiana.
