Biographical / Historical
Newell United Methodist Church was located at 229 LaMarque Street, Mandeville, Louisiana.
Newell Chapel was established in the early days of the Mississippi Mission Conference, which first met in December 1865. Its design was to educate African-Americans for the ministry and acted as a school for the African American youth during the early years. The original structure stood where the current church now stands.
The church was rebuilt in 1886. Under the leadership of Rev. G. C. Hayward, it was remodeled in 1917. In 1971, the present church was built. The church sustained heavy damage from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and began meeting in their Multi-Purpose Building. The sanctuary was repaired and reopened on September 24, 2006. In 2012, the church was damaged by Hurricane Issac.
Newell United Methodist Church was closed in June 2024.
