Biographical / Historical

Oak Grove United Methodist Church was located at 1189 Highway 795, Gibsland, Louisiana.

The first church building, a log cabin, was built along the old stagecoach road that went from Vicksburg to Shreveport. It was replaced by a new church building in 1890. The church and a school were built on the community road about a mile south of the old church.

After a storm destroyed the church in the 1930s, services were held at the Oak Grove School. Its students had recently been transferred to the Gibsland High School, and the school and an acre of land were given to the church by the Dalton family. The church bought two acres of land for $35 on June 12, 1936. On October 28, 1945, the former schoolhouse was dedicated as the Oak Grove Methodist Church. The addition of a sanctuary to the front of the church was made the following year.

The old church was torn down in 1973 and a new church was built. The new church was dedicated on September 8, 1974. A fellowship room (with a kitchen and bathroom) was added to the west side of the church in 1983 and dedicated the following December. After obtaining a license for a cemetery on April 22, 1997, the land was cleared in a few months. A one-acre cemetery now lies on the west side of the church. The fellowship room and kitchen were enlarged in 1998.

Oak Grove United Methodist Church disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church in May 2023.
