Biographical / Historical
Provencal United Methodist Church (Provencal, La.) is located at 140 Bellwood Church Road, Provencal, Louisiana.
In 1881, the year after Provencal was founded, the Methodist Church was established. Their first church building in 1883 was called Union, since the Baptist and Methodist churches used it for services. The Methodists built their own two-story building a few years later. Services were held on the first floor, while the Masons used the second. In 1913, a tornado destroyed the church and all of its records. The membership (about 200 at that time) built a new church soon after.
In 1959, the current church was built under the leadership of Rev. W.R. Akin. An education building was later built. It included a dining area and kitchen. In subsequent years, a foyer was added.
When the congregation outgrew the kitchen in the education building, a fellowship building was purchased in 1999 under the leadership of Rev. Don Davis.
In 2003, new carpeting and eight stained glass windows (depicting scenes from Christ's life) were installed.
Provencal United Methodist Church disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church in 2023.
