Biographical / Historical

Grand Cane United Methodist Church (Grand Cane, La.) is located at 1908 West Main Street, Grand Cane, Louisiana.

The Methodist Church of Grand Carte had its beginning in 1875 with the first building being located on the site of the old B.F. Chaffin home. The Rev. John Cassity was the pastor. The present sanctuary was erected in 1888 on the corner of Hwy 171 and Eatman St. This took place under the Rev. R.J. Harp. The church became a beautiful landmark in the community and with its elegant bell tower and steeple, the Methodist Church could be seen by many travelers on the road coming south from Shreveport. It is regretable that the steeple had to be removed in later years, having been damaged by lightning and rendered unsafe. Among the charter members appeared the family names of Ivey, Hopgood, McLanahan, Wl;\gner, Chaffin, Cadenhead, Phillips, Jackson, Spearman, and McLain.

In 1942, a contract was signed to add two Sunday School rooms, a choir loft, a pulpit rostrum in the rear of the building. Plans also called for a Sunday School room to be added to the rear of the vestibule. This work, along with other repairs ; painĀting, etc.; came to the sum of '1,100.

The records indicate that a Building Committee was organized again in 1959, with John C. Griffith, Jr. as Chairman. Serving with him were Otis Lee, Gladys Fike, and Joe Dunn. The Rev. Leon Scott was the pastor. In 1960, the addition of an adjoining building on the north side was a reality, providing restrooms, a kitchen, Sunday School space and a small fellowship hall for the congregation. Since this addition, there has been no other construction.

As this first pictorial church directory goes to press, the membership stands at 76, with Mr. Shelton Farmer as the AdĀministrative Board Chairman.
