Identifier: CCL-Public Relations Office

Scope and Contents

This collection consists of office records created and maintained by the Public Relations Office at Centenary College of Louisiana. It includes audiovisual materials, clippings, compact discs, floppy disks, photographs, photograph negatives, press releases, and subject files. The subject files contain clippings, correspondence, notes, photographs, and printed items.

Accession 2009-004 compact discs contain electronic files that have been transferred to the archives' network-attached storage. Accession 2009-004 photographs (1999-2003) and photograph negatives (1994-1998) provide extensive documentation of events on campus.

It seems that some material in the collection was originally shared among multiple employees within the Office of the Vice President at Centenary College of Louisiana. The Office of the Vice President included the Public Relations Office as well as the Development Office, Church Relations Office, and Alumni Relations Office. This material can be found within Series 5: Accession 1996-116.

Biographical / Historical

The Public Relations Office at Centenary College of Louisiana was established in 1979, and it served as the administrative office responsible for publicizing news about the college. Before 1979, the office was known as the News Bureau. The Public Relations Office collected information about Centenary’s faculty, staff, and students. It created and distributed press releases to the region’s newspapers as well as television and radio stations. It also edited the college’s magazine “Centenary” (1970-1988), the faculty-staff news bulletin “Scuttlebutt” (1963-1987), and additional college brochures and publications.

The name of the office was used with varying consistency over time. The following list provides the predominate names and approximate years: News Bureau (1924-1936), Public Relations Department (1936-1951), News Bureau (1951-1979), Public Relations (1979-2008), Marketing and Communications (2008-2010), External Relations (2011-2015), Marketing and Communication (2016-present).
