Biographical / Historical

The Shreveport District of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (MECS) formed in 1848. Prior to 1848, most of the churches that made up the Shreveport District belonged to the Alexandria District.

In 1848, the Shreveport District reported 1,716 members (1,198 white, 518 colored) and 7 pastoral charges. The district consisted of congregations in northwest Louisiana stretching from Shreveport to Natchitoches.

Through a multi-denominational Methodist merger in 1939, the Shreveport District of the Louisiana Conference MECS became the Shreveport District of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Church, South Central Jurisdiction. In 1939, the district reported 14,511 members, 25 pastoral charges, 52 congregations, and 55 church buildings.
