Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The Zollie G. Bennett scrapbook primarily documents student life and athletics at Centenary College of Louisiana, where Bennett was enrolled from fall 1923 to spring 1928. Bennett played on the college’s football and baseball teams. The scrapbook includes many Centenary photographs depicting football, baseball, faculty members, students, cheerleaders, campus buildings, and the college’s May festival and carnival. Newspaper clippings document Centenary football, including the death of teammate Robert Read. Additional Centenary material includes Bennett’s athletic association certificates (1924-1925) and a handbill mocking football coach Earl A. Davis. Also from Bennett’s time as a college student are photographs depicting Shreveport scenes – a flag raising ceremony at the Strand Theatre (1925 July 2, the day before it first opened), the Caddo Parish Courthouse, and the Shreveport Little Theatre’s production of “The Cajun” (1926).

The scrapbook also contains material documenting Bennett’s life before and after his college years. Photographs depict Bennett as a young child and other family members. Material about Bennett playing football at Texas High School (Texarkana, Texas) includes photographs and his varsity letter patch (1921). Also included is Bennett’s Citizen’s Military Training Camp certificate (1922). Additional photographs relate to Bennett’s work as a coach at Louisiana high schools – Winnfield High School football (1928-1929), Baskin High School basketball (1929-1930), and Wisner High School football (1930-1931).
