Biography

Zollie G. Bennett (1905-1986) is the son of George Clinton Bennett (1873-1924) and Ella May Ashcroft Bennett (1878-1957). Zollie attended Texas High School (Texarkana, Texas), played on the school’s football team, and graduated in 1923. In fall 1923, he enrolled at Centenary College of Louisiana and graduated in 1928. While at Centenary, he played on the college’s football and basketball teams. Bennett worked as a coach at Louisiana high schools – Winnfield High School (1928-1929), Baskin High School (1929-1930), and Wisner High School (1930-1931). According to Centenary alumni publications from the late 1940s and 1950s, he worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad Company in Texarkana, Texas. In 1937, Bennett married Gertrude L. Baskins (1910-1982).

Scope and Contents The Zollie G. Bennett scrapbook primarily documents student life and athletics at Centenary College of Louisiana, where Bennett was enrolled from fall 1923 to spring 1928. Bennett played on the college’s football and baseball teams. The scrapbook includes many Centenary photographs depicting football, baseball, faculty members, students, cheerleaders, campus buildings, and the college’s May festival and carnival.
