The Centenary Nursery School opened in January 1950, and its kindergarten opened in September 1953. According to a brochure about the school, it served a three-fold purpose: 1) providing opportunities for play with children ages two to five years old, 2) meeting the needs of students in child development from the Home Economics Department and Education and Psychology Department as well as providing opportunities for work with children to the music, art, physical education, and other departments in the college, 3) serving parents of Shreveport.
