Edith Bailey Barisas scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Edith Bailey Barisas scrapbook includes material documenting her senior year at Centenary College of Louisiana, September 1934 to May 1935. It primarily contains newspaper clippings about Centenary football, basketball, and boxing, as well as Barisas serving as Homecoming Queen and a member of Alpha Xi Delta. Centenary football items also include game programs (1934 September 22, 1934 October 13, 1934 November 10, 1934 November 29), game tickets (1934 September 19, 1934 September 22, 1934 September 29, 1934 November 17), hand drawn notes of game play-by-play (1934 October 20, 1934 November 10), and a program for a football testimonial dinner (1934 December 19). Material also relates to Barisas participating in Centenary’s variety show, Kollege Kapers; this includes a program, ticket, and hand drawn map of the show’s tour locations in January 1935. Programs for other Centenary events occurring in April and May 1935 include stunt night, May Fete, School of Music annual concert, senior play, and commencement. The scrapbook also contains a few photographs of Barisas and her friends.

Biographical / Historical
Edith Bailey Barisas (1915-2016) is the daughter of Arthur and Dovie Bailey. Edith attended Fair Park High School in Shreveport (graduated in 1931), Centenary College of Louisiana (graduated in 1935), and Louisiana State University (Master of Arts degree in English in 1936). Barisas was a teacher and worked at Fair Park High School (early 1940s) and Centenary College of Louisiana’s History Department (fall 1945 - spring 1946). She began teaching in the Kansas City public school system in 1953 and worked as a high school English teacher and school district consultant until her retirement in 1977. In 1941, she married Bernard George Barisas (1915-1995).
