Scope and Contents
Typescript of John Lytle Scales’ memoirs covering his life from the 1870s until approximately 1960. The memoirs were originally handwritten from approximately 1949 to 1960. They include details about his childhood in Mansfield (Louisiana), attending Centenary College of Louisiana (Jackson, La.) from 1889 to 1892, teaching private school near Barbreck (Saint Landry Parish, La.) in 1893, medical education at the University of Nashville from 1894 to 1897, working as a doctor in northern Caddo and Bossier parishes from 1897 to 1909, medical education at Moorfields Eye Hospital (London, England) from 1909 to 1910, working as a doctor in Shreveport from 1910 to 1946, and serving as a Centenary College of Louisiana trustee from 1913 to 1967. This transcription from 2012 was created by Leon Scales, the grandson of John Lytle Scales. Leon Scales also composed the editor’s note, footnotes, and endnotes.

Biographical / Historical
John Lytle Scales (1871-1968) is the son of John Lytle Scales (1833-1890) and Margaret Steadman Mundy Scales (1848-1928). He enrolled at Centenary College of Louisiana in 1889 and graduated in 1892. In 1897, he earned a medical degree from the University of Nashville. Scales worked as a doctor in Shreveport from 1910 until his retirement in 1946. He served on Centenary’s board of trustees from 1913 to 1967, was chairman from 1915 to 1936, and was made an honorary life member in 1967. He was one of the organizers of the Shreveport Rotary Club in 1919. He also served on the boards of Shreveport Little Theatre, Shreveport YMCA, and Norwela Boy Scouts Council. In 1899, Scales married Olive Webb (1872-1905); they had two children. In 1907, he married Ethel Webb (1885-1966); they had one child.

Memoirs donated circa 1999 were incomplete due to printing error; all even-numbered pages were missing. A complete version was donated in 2020, and the incomplete version was discarded.
