Scope and Contents

The Harry Hale, Jr. papers primarily consist of research material Hale collected while writing the book, Standing in the Gap: The Life and Ministry of Rev. Lea Joyner (Lima, OH: Fairway Press, 1987). Joyner was one of the few ordained woman in the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Church (South Central Jurisdiction) during the mid-twentieth century. The collection contains newspaper clippings, written reminiscences, and research notes. Also included are audiocassettes of Joyner’s sermons as well as interviews with people about Joyner. Those interviewed include Joyner's cousins, Rev. J. P. "Bud" McKeithen and Louisiana Governor John McKeithen.

Biographical / Historical

Harry Hale, Jr. (1933-2011) was born and raised in Fresno, California. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Fresno State University in 1959 and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Tennessee in 1963. He was a professor of sociology at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe (later renamed University of Louisiana in Monroe) from 1974 to 2011. Hale’s publications included the following books: New Witnesses: United Methodist Clergywomen (Nashville: United Methodist Church, Board of Higher Education and Ministry, 1980), Clergywomen: Problems and Satisfactions (Lima, Ohio: Fairway Press, 1985), Practical Sociology: Applications and Activities (New York: Harper & Row, 1986), and Standing in the Gap: The Life and Ministry of Rev. Lea Joyner (Lima, OH: Fairway Press, 1987).
