Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

These records contain administrative reports about church congregations on the Calcasieu Circuit of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The circuit was part of the Opelousas District located in southwest Louisiana. The circuit included the following congregations: Calcasieu Camp Ground, Dry Creek, Grand Chenier Mission, Harvards, Hickory Flat, Lacassine, Lake Charles, Mill Creek, Reeves Settlement, Smith’s Settlement, and Sugar Town.

The administrative reports contain information about the spiritual condition of congregations, the religious instruction of children, financial matters, and information about baptisms and membership. Specific individuals identified in the volume include church administrators and a list of all members belonging to the Calcasieu Circuit in 1859. In a few instances, members are identified upon baptism or death. Also included are Grand Chenier Mission reports drafted by Joel Sanders.
