Biography

Carrie Virginia Schwing Tomb (1874-1964) is the daughter of Samuel Cothran Schwing (1842-1900) and Lilah Virginia Schwing (1841-1930). She and her sister were among the first group of female students to enroll at Centenary College of Louisiana in fall 1898. Centenary awarded Carrie a certificate of completion in 1900, and she was presented a diploma at Centenary’s commencement exercises in 1947. In 1904, she married John Samuel Tomb (1874-1975) and lived in Jackson, Louisiana. They had three children.

Carrie Virginia Schwing's Centenary College of Louisiana graduation certificate for Bachelor of Science (1900). Note: starting with its first female graduates in 1900, Centenary awarded women a certificate of completion rather than a diploma. In June 1905, the board of trustees approved granting diplomas to future and past female graduates.
