Biography

Regina “Jennie” Lane May Cameron (1884-1972) is the daughter of Rev. Harry W. May (1861-1931) and Sara H. May (1860-1935). She enrolled as a student at Centenary College of Louisiana in 1899, one year after the college began admitting women. In 1904, May graduated from Centenary. She received her Master of Arts degree from Phillips University (Enid, Okla.) in 1926 and taught school at various levels from elementary through college in seven states. She was an ordained minister of the Disciples of Christ Church, worked for the Ration Board during World War II, and for the Internal Revenue Service until her retirement in 1952. She married Emory Cloe Cameron (1894-1936), a professor of religion at Butler University (Indianapolis, Ind.). They had a son, William Bruce Cameron.

Jennie Lane May’s Centenary College of Louisiana diploma for Bachelor of Science (1904). Note: starting with its first female graduates in 1900, Centenary awarded women a certificate of completion rather than a diploma. In June 1905, the board of trustees approved granting diplomas to future and past female graduates.
