Biography

John McVea (1820-1876) was born in Ireland and worked as a lawyer and judge in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. He attended the College of Louisiana (Jackson, La.) and graduated in 1840. McVea served on the board of trustees for the College of Louisiana from 1841 until 1845. In 1846, he joined the board of trustees for the Centenary College of Louisiana and served until his death in 1876. In 1840, McVea married Rhoda Jane Scott (1822-1851). In 1855, he married Emilie Rose Watts (1832-1916).

Collection contains photocopy facsimiles of documents about John McVea. Includes an application for United States citizenship (1842), an oath of office for becoming a Louisiana judge (1859), and his last will and testament (1876).
