Biography

Clarence Tilden Hamel (1906-1990) is the son of Charles Higdon Hamel (1876-1953) and Lucy Christian Hamel (1882-1961). Raised in El Paso, Texas, and Shreveport, Louisiana, he graduated from Shreveport High School in 1925. In fall 1925, Hamel enrolled at Centenary College of Louisiana and played on the school’s football, track, and freshman baseball teams. In 1929, he graduated from Centenary with a Bachelor of Science degree. Hamel worked as a coach and teacher at the College of Marshall (Marshall, Texas) from 1929 to 1939. In 1929, Hamel married Kate Styron (1909-1996). From 1939 to 1979, the Hamels owned and operated Styron Engraving Company (Shreveport, Louisiana).
