Biography

Earl Davis Nolan, Sr. (1907-1987) is the son of Jesse Jones Nolan (1879-1930) and Mary Frances “Mollie” Stokes Nolan (1879-1969). He graduated from Oak Grove High School, attended Louisiana State University for one year, then transferred to Centenary College of Louisiana. At Centenary, he played on the football and basketball teams, and graduated in 1932. Nolan went on to work as an athletic coach at North Louisiana high schools - Gibsland, Belcher, Vivian, and Oil City. In 1969, he retired from Oil City High School having served as the coach for 32 years. In 1930, Nolan married Margaret Pearl Burton Nolan (1910-1989).

Scope and Contents The Earl Davis Nolan, Sr. scrapbook primarily documents athletics at Centenary College of Louisiana, where Nolan was enrolled from fall 1928 to spring 1932. He played on the college’s football and basketball teams; his nickname was “Little Boy Blue.” The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, telegrams, and a football season pass (1930). The final pages contain clippings about his wife, Margaret Nolan, and her Centenary activities related to May Fete (1930) and a theater performance...
