William Winans family

Biography

William Winans (1788-1857) was born in Pennsylvania and raised in Ohio. In 1808, Winans became a preacher in the Western Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1810, he was appointed to serve Attakapas in the Mississippi District. For the remainder of his life, he served churches in Mississippi.

In 1845, Winans was part of the committee that established a plan of separation for the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Around 1842, Winans joined the board of trustees for Centenary College (Brandon Springs, Miss.). He continued to serve as a trustee for Centenary College of Louisiana (Jackson, La.) until 1855. He served as chairman of these boards from approximately 1845 until 1855.

In 1814, Winans married Martha Louise Dubose (1797-1862). Their children are Mary Susannah Winans Wall (1816-1897), Wesley Lane Winans (1819-1819), Margaret Louise Clairborne Winans Dickson (1822-1853), Wesley Parker Winans (1825-1863), and Ann Eliza Winans Dickson (1828-1899).
