Biography

Robert Hunter McGimsey (1860-1920) was the son of Robert Vance McGimsey (1829-1861) and Eliza Louisa Hunter (1836-1918). He enrolled at Centenary College of Louisiana in 1877 and graduated in 1882. From approximately 1883 to 1884, McGimsey worked as a pharmacist in Pineville, Louisiana. In 1885, he became a public school teacher in Cheneyville, Louisiana. Then, from approximately 1886 to 1892, he served as Centenary’s professor of mathematics. In subsequent years, McGimsey worked as a teacher and attorney in Alexandria, Louisiana. He also served on Centenary’s board of trustees from 1900 to approximately 1905. McGimsey married Alice Matthews (1861-1955) in 1887, and they had six children.

Scope and Contents The Robert Hunter McGimsey family papers primarily consist of material documenting his time as a student and faculty member at Centenary College of Louisiana.
