Biography

The Waldheim United Methodist Church (Waldheim, La.) traces its history to the dedication in 1875 of a church building originally named Boniface Methodist Episcopal Church South. Throughout the years, it has also been called Saint Tammany Mission, Camp Ground, Talisheek, and German Settlement. In 1887, the congregation constructed an open-air shed “tabernacle” that hosted camp meetings. In 1978, the church was designated a United Methodist Historic Site. This congregation was originally part of the German Mission Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, which existed from 1874 to 1885. Due to its location east of the Mississippi River in Louisiana’s Florida Parishes, the church was then part of the Mississippi Conference Methodist Episcopal Church South until 1893.
