Shongaloo Circuit Methodist Protestant Church (Webster Parish, La.)
Biography
The Shongaloo Circuit of the Arkansas Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church consisted of
congregations located in Webster Parish, Louisiana, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The
circuit included: Liberty Hill Methodist Protestant Church (Sikes Ferry, La.), New Era Methodist
Protestant Church, Potter Methodist Protestant Church, Shongaloo Methodist Protestant Church
(Shongaloo, La.), and Union Point Methodist Protestant Church. In 1938, two of the churches closed –
Potter and Union Point.
Shongaloo Methodist Protestant Church was organized in 1867. In 1939, the church was renamed the
Shongaloo Methodist Church and joined the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Church, South
Central Jurisdiction. This coincided with the denominational merger in which the Methodist Protestant
Church joined with the Methodist Episcopal Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church South to
form the Methodist Church.
