Biography

Huff Chapel United Methodist Church (Killian, La.) is located at 30000 Huff Chapel Road, Killian, Louisiana.

Services first began under brush arbors. A Methodist building was constructed at some point after the Civil War. Both Methodists and Baptists worshipped at the site, located around Bull Run Road near a Davidson cemetery. Circuit riders would hold services once a month.

The Methodist became more organized under one of those circuit riders, George W. Huff. A church was built on land donated by Adolphus Rousseaux. It consisted of two acres behind the old Forbes house. High flood water allowed the men to float logs to John Davidson’s mill to be cut for the new church. That same high water also made it difficult for the pastor to travel to town over the years. The building was completed in 1890. The church was named after its first pastor. For years, the church was known for Saturday dinners called Children’s Day.

At some point before 1940, the church was moved to two acres at its present location. Sunday school rooms were built. In 1964, Hurricane Betsy destroyed the church facilities. Services continued at an old store south of the Killian Baptist Church. A new church was built by Rev. John Barber (of the Springfield UMC) while Rev. John Sayes served as pastor. A kitchen, another room, and restrooms were later added under the leadership of Rev. Larry Stafford.

A memorial park was added in 1985-90. An education building was completed in 1990 under the leadership of Rev. Gene Faurie and was dedicated on October 14, 1990.

Huff Chapel United Methodist Church disaffiliated from the United Methodist Church in May 2023.
