Biography

The French Mission District of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (MECS) originated as the Houma District of the Louisiana Conference MECS in 1919. That year, the district consisted of 6 pastoral charges (10 churches) and 553 members; the churches were located in South Louisiana cities/communities such as: Bayou Blue, Houma, Jeanerette, Lockport, Patterson, Pecan Island, and Port Barre.

In 1920, the Houma District’s name was changed to the French Mission District. Then, by 1923, the district’s churches were transferred to the New Orleans District. In 1922 – the final year of the French Mission District – the district consisted of 7 pastoral charges (23 churches) and 797 members; the churches were located in South Louisiana cities/communities such as: Bayou Blue, Houma, Lockport, Lydia, Melville, Mermentau, Port Barre, Raceland, Saint Martinville, and Ville Platte.

From 1919 to 1922, Martin Hebert served as the district's presiding elder.
