Biography
The French Mission District of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South
(MECS) originated as the Houma District of the Louisiana Conference MECS in 1919. That year, the
district consisted of 6 pastoral charges (10 churches) and 553 members; the churches were located in
South Louisiana cities/communities such as: Bayou Blue, Houma, Jeanerette, Lockport, Patterson,
Pecan Island, and Port Barre.
In 1920, the Houma District’s name was changed to the French Mission District. Then, by 1923, the
district’s churches were transferred to the New Orleans District. In 1922 – the final year of the French
Mission District – the district consisted of 7 pastoral charges (23 churches) and 797 members; the
churches were located in South Louisiana cities/communities such as: Bayou Blue, Houma, Lockport,
Lydia, Melville, Mermentau, Port Barre, Raceland, Saint Martinville, and Ville Platte.
From 1919 to 1922, Martin Hebert served as the district's presiding elder.

This collection consists of the minutes of annual meetings (called a District Conference) by the French
Mission District of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. These
meetings were attended by the district’s clergy and lay delegates from each pastoral charge; it was

Scope and Contents
This collection consists of a scrapbook primarily containing newspaper article clippings (1898-1913)
documenting the pastoral activities of Rev. Martin Hebert in south Louisiana among French-speaking
communities. Hebert wrote some of the articles, which originally appeared in the New Orleans
Christian Advocate, a weekly newspaper published by the Methodist Episcopal Church South. The
