Biography

Centenary College of Louisiana’s Franklin Institute formed in 1843. This organization (and Centenary’s other literary society, the Union Literary Society) were described in the college’s course catalog dated 1845-1846: “These [societies] are of great utility to young men acquiring a liberal education — improving them in the art of public speaking, making them in some degree familiar with the proceedings of deliberative bodies, and cultivating systematic business habits. Each has a convenient hall and well selected library.”

Scope and Contents Collection consists of digital facsimile printouts of newspaper clippings about Centenary College while it existed in Brandon Springs, Mississippi. Also included is an inventory containing brief notes and citations for the clippings. The clippings include advertisements, announcements, articles, editorials, letters about the college, and descriptions of the campus property. Scope and Contents

This collection consists of programs for exhibitions presented by student literary societies at Centenary College of Louisiana. Included are programs for joint exhibitions of the Union Literary Society and Franklin Institute (1856 March 7; 1856 July 29; 1883 June 5). Also included are programs for exhibitions of the Lafayette Society (1856 April 19) and Eclectic Literary Institute (1859 July 27).
