Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopied facsimiles of correspondence to and about Inman Williams Cooper. A letter dated 1898 from John Christian Keener mentions Cooper being elected president of Centenary College of Louisiana, repairs to college buildings for damages caused by stabling students’ horses in dormitory rooms and baseballs breaking windows, reestablishment of the college’s preparatory school, and the construction of professors’ homes. A letter dated 1931 from William Hamilton Nelson to Janie Drake Cooper relates to the pages in Nelson’s Centenary College history book containing information about her husband, Inman Williams Cooper.

Biographical / Historical
Inman Williams Cooper (1856-1925) was the son of Rev. Preston and Lucretia Cooper. He was raised in Yazoo County, Mississippi, and graduated from Hiwassee College (Madisonville, Tenn.) in 1875. In 1876, he joined the Mississippi Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South and served pastoral appointments to congregations in Mississippi. From 1898 to 1902, Cooper served as the president at Centenary College of Louisiana (Jackson, La.). From 1902 to 1925, he served as the president at Whitworth College (Brookhaven, Miss.).
