Scope and Contents

The Winbourne Magruder Drake family papers consist of material about the family and their connections to Centenary College of Louisiana (Jackson, La.). A typescript copy of William Hezekiah Nathaniel Magruder’s letter (1845) to Benjamin Michael Drake concerns the move of Centenary College (Brandon Springs, Miss.) to the site of the defunct College of Louisiana (Jackson, La.). A photocopy of William Winans Drake’s memoir appeared in the “Annual of the Louisiana Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South” (1933). Also included is a photocopy of the journal article “Two Letters of H. Winbourne Drake, Civil War Refugee in Northwest Louisiana” edited by W. Magruder Drake, Louisiana History (winter 1966). Winbourne Magruder Drake’s essay titled “The Drake Family of Port Gibson, Mississippi” written in 1983 provides historical and genealogical information.
