Biography

Rutillius Pinkney Cates (1836-1862) was born in Holmes County, Mississippi. He enrolled at Centenary College of Louisiana and graduated in 1858. In 1860, he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Louisiana. By 1861, Cates worked as a lawyer in Shreveport, Louisiana. He served in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War and died during the Battle of Antietam.
